Introduction: The Indian Army Agniveer is a part of the Agnipath Scheme, introduced by the Government of India in 2022. This scheme aims to recruit young soldiers, known as Agniveers, for a short service period of four years in the Indian Armed Forces. Eligibility Criteria: To apply for the Indian Army Agniveer post, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Age Limit: 17½ to 21 years.
  • Educational Qualification: Depending on the trade, the minimum qualification ranges from 10th pass for General Duty (GD) roles to 10+2 for Technical and Nursing Assistant roles.
  • Physical Standards: The height, weight, and chest measurements vary depending on the region. Candidates must also meet the physical fitness standards set by the Indian Army.

Selection Process: The selection process for Indian Army Agniveers includes:

  1. Written Exam (CEE): The Common Entrance Exam (CEE) is conducted for different trades like General Duty, Clerk, Store Keeper, Technical, etc. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions on subjects such as General Knowledge, Mathematics, and Science.
  2. Physical Fitness Test (PFT): The PFT includes a 1.6 km run, pull-ups, balance tests, and a 9-feet ditch jump. Candidates are graded based on their performance in these tests.
  3. Medical Examination: Candidates must pass a thorough medical examination to ensure they meet the health and fitness standards required by the Indian Army.
  4. Document Verification: All required documents such as educational certificates, identity proof, and others are verified during this stage
Job Profile: The role of an Agniveer in the Indian Army varies depending on the trade they are assigned to. Key duties may include:
  1. General Duty (GD): Engaging in combat, security duties, and operational tasks.
  2. Technical: Handling and maintaining military equipment and vehicles.
  3. Clerk/Store Keeper: Managing administrative work, documentation, and inventory.
  4. Tradesman: Performing specific trades like cooking, carpentry, or housekeeping.
Agniveers serve a four-year term during which they gain valuable military training, discipline, and exposure to various aspects of military life.

Salary: The salary of an Agniveer follows a structured pay system, which increases progressively each year:
    • 1st Year: ₹30,000 per month
    • 2nd Year: ₹33,000 per month
    • 3rd Year: ₹36,500 per month
    • 4th Year: ₹40,000 per monthmonth

In addition to the salary, Agniveers receive benefits such as ration, uniform, medical cover, and risk and hardship allowances. Upon completion of four years, a Seva Nidhi package amounting to ₹11.71 lakhs is provided, which is a one-time lump sum payment including contributions from the individual and the government, along with interest.

Promotion: Since Agniveers serve a fixed tenure of four years, there are no conventional promotions as seen in regular military service. However, based on their performance during their tenure, up to 25% of Agniveers may be selected for re-enlistment into the regular cadre of the Indian Army, where they can pursue a longer military career with opportunities for promotion through various ranks.
